ACNE AND ACNE ROSACEA
What is Acne?
Acne is a chronic inflammation of
the pilosebaceous glands of the face and trunk that occurs in adolescence
and early adulthood. It is manifested by black heads (comedones),
papules, nodules, cysts or pustules. It is often but not always followed
by pitted reddened scars. There are many types of Acne. The most
common is called Acne Vulgaris.

How do Acne Lesions Form?
Just beneath the surface of the skin
lie hundreds of tiny glands called sebaceous glands. Their function
is to collect and excrete an oily substance to keep the skin healthy.
The tiny pathway for the sebum to escape often becomes clogged and
a bacterium called p.acnes grows inside. In a short time
the area swells up and forms a pimple on the skin.
How can I control My Acne?
Our acne program includes home care products to enhance
our in-clinic treatment program. At the clinic you will undergo
two processes. The first is a facial treatment called Sono Peel and
the second is light therapy to kill P. acnes the bacteria responsible
for most acne blemishes.
Are there any Treatments that don’t involve taking
Medicines?
Yes we try to avoid the use of systemic
medications.
1) The Sono Peel
SonoPeels ..by
UltraMax™
Ultrasonic Skincare System
The UltraMax™ ultrasonic skincare system
- Skin cleansing using ultrasonic wave motion
- Removal of aged surfaced skin
- Increased skin's metabolism
- Diminish the appearance of acne blemishes
- Utilizes up to 28,000 vibration cycles per
second, variable power
- Multiple-mode system includes pulsed, non-pulsed & massage
settings

The most current form of exfoliation is “ultrasound
scrubbing”. It is great for all skin types and preferred
among those with sensitive skin, acne or rosacea. SonoPeels result
in cleaner, smoother more radiant looking skin.
Sono Penetration completes the treatment protocol
and penetration compounds are customized to your skins needs. Rejuvenated,
luminescent skin is the result of these processes.
2) Light Therapy
A wavelength of light from 405-420
nm is used. It is in the visible Blue spectrum of light therefore
these treatments are referred often as Blu U light therapy. These
particular wavelengths of light are toxic to P. acnes, the bacteria
responsible for most acne blemishes. The treatment consists of sitting
under the light for 20 minutes twice a week. This light is not hot
or painful and is rather relaxing ...bring your music and relax for
20 minutes. There is no downside to the treatment...no UV light exposure
and no down time. You look 'normal' right after the treatment.

3) Individualized Skin Care
Package: 3 lines of skin care products are available for
you as your home care part of the regime and will be individualized
to meet your needs.

What is Acne Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic condition that affects facial
skin. It is characterized by redness on the cheeks, nose, chin
and forehead. Overtime the redness tends to become ruddier
and more persistent and visible blood vessels may appear (telangiectasia). If
left untreated, bumps and pimples (acne rosacea) often develop and
in severe cases the nose may grow swollen and bumpy (rhinophyma-think
W. C. Fields).
This condition affects women and men, but men sometimes
leave it untreated longer therefore it appears more severe.
Treatment involves a gentle skin care routine, sunscreen
and some topical medications may temporize the condition.
Laser therapy with a highly specific vascular laser
is the best treatment option for reversing the condition of rosacea. Redness
in reduced or eliminated, the small blood vessels can be eliminated
and even prominent nasal veins can be eliminated. If your condition
has progressed to Acne Rosacea additional therapies will be
added to correct this condition.
At Laser Health Works we specialize in the treatment
of Rosacea. Let the our Medical Team at Laser Health Works
help you decide what treatment is best for your facial redness.
What Treatments are available for Acne Rosacea?
Treatment of Acne Rosacea first
involves avoidance of factors which are thought to worsen this
condition. These include the avoidance of harsh climatic effects
on the face, dehydrating beverages and the moderation of alcohol
intake if this is thought to aggravate the condition. (Some patients
with acne rosacea do not drink alcohol at all although most report
being suspected of over imbibing).
Rosacea itself (Rosacea without acne) it can
be treated with a pulse dye laser (see Treatment
of Rosacea, Facial Redness, Facial and Nasal Red Veins….)
Acne Rosacea can be treated
or at least controlled with some of the same creams and medications
used to treat adolescent acne. Acne Rosacea can also be dramatically
improved with Photodynamic
Therapy, which will actually shrink the sebaceous glands and
improve the reddened appearance of the skin.
