FOR PREVENTING DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT)
- Move around. Whenever a person is immobile, risk for DVT increases. After surgery or childbirth is a particularly risky time, since the body responds to recent blood loss by increasing the blood's tendency to clot. Walking or even simple leg exercise gets blood flowing and decreases the risk of DVTs.
- Elevate the leg. Elevating the legs fights the effects of gravity on blood flow up the leg vein.
- Drink lots of water. Dehydratation thickens the blood. Drinking lots of water and avoiding alcohol and caffeine prevents dehydration to protect against DVT.

- In

Deep vein thrombosis or DVT is a blood clot in one of the deep veins, which can have life-threatening consequences. A DVT can become dislodged and flow through the bloodstream and lodge in the lungs. This is called a pulmonary embolism and it has the potential to cause death.
